The Child Support Grant (CSG) is a social grant provided by SASSA to help primary caregivers meet the basic needs of children in their care. It is paid monthly for each qualifying child.
The grant is means-tested, meaning it is available to caregivers whose income falls below a certain threshold. The current grant amount is R580 per child per month.
You can apply for the Child Support Grant for up to 6 children that you are the primary caregiver for. The grant continues until the child turns 18 years old.
Caregiver Requirements:
- South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee
- Primary caregiver of the child
- Lives in South Africa
- Meets the income requirements (means test)
Child Requirements:
- Under 18 years old
- South African citizen
- Not in a state-funded institution
- Living with the caregiver
To qualify for the Child Support Grant, your income must be below the following thresholds:

Proof of Address
Utility bill or affidavit confirming residence

Child Support Grant applications must be made in person at a SASSA office.
